Collaborate rather than compete

24.04.2020

In these troubled times a lot of us ask the question – when is everything going to be normal again? But it is important for all of us to reflect on the issue of what this “normal” is that we want to go back to and what it is that we want to change and evolve around us to help create a better world.

At Tretorn, we think that there will not be any “going back to normal” as the new normal will look different from what we are used to. However, there is a possibility for all of us to make a new start, a new beginning of something more resilient than what we are used to. To make this new normal happen, we as brands, organizations and people need to collaborate more rather than compete. We need to create ways to collaborate with a clear cause. For 2020 we partnered up with SEA LIFE Trust, a registered charity (no. 1175859) working globally to protect the world’s oceans and the amazing marine life that lives within them. It is our next step in collaborating and contributing to the world around us.

The partnership between Tretorn X SEA LIFE Trust is based on a shared passion for healthy oceans, that is properly protected and full of diverse life. With the partnership we want to inspire people to be part of creating a better world and enjoy time spent outdoors. For every product sold in this partnership we will donate 10 % of the retail price to SEA LIFE Trust.

The partnership is now shortlisted as a finalist for Drapers Footwear Awards 2020 in the category Best Sustainable Initiative of the Year.

Approximately 650,000 tons of fishing nets are estimated to drift like debris in our oceans. Every two-three years the fishing fleets usually change nets, which are made from some of the best nylon materials in the world. Nets often disappear in the sea as debris and since this high-quality nylon decays slowly, it drifts with the wind and currents for years as “ghost nets”. Eventually, they can end up on a reef where they can knock out entire eco systems. Ghost nets are considered among the greatest killers in our oceans. Approximately one million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and turtles die each year due to debris in our oceans. The partnership is based on a collection of jackets, bags and sneakers – all made from regenerated nylon from discarded fishing nets and other consumer ocean waste.

Upcycling fishing nets and other waste

RESCUE

The ECONYL® Regeneration System starts with rescuing from landfills and oceans all over the world. The waste is then sorted and cleaned to recover all of the nylon possible.

REGENERATE

The nylon waste is recycled right back to its original purity. That means ECONYL® regenerated nylon is exactly the same as virgin nylon. After the waste is collected, different types of waste are cleaned and prepared for regeneration. As part of the cleaning process, materials other than nylon are removed and sent to other supply chains.

REMAKE

ECONYL® regenerated nylon is processed from pellets into textile yarn that we can either use as pure nylon or mix with organic cotton. It can also be woven into different patterns and hand feels to create different styles.

REIMAGINED

The remade textile is then transformed into fabric suitable for Tretorn rain jackets, bags and sneakers. All made with waterproof functionality and in great style while helping to protect the oceans and slowly eliminating the concept of waste.
